STONE PINE   Pinus cembra

Stone pine
The stone pine, also known as "Queen of the Alps", is an evergreen conifer. It is a member of the white pine group. As a tree of the alpine high-altitude mountains, it grows to heights of over 2500 meters above sea level
This type of pine has a slow but steady growth. It tolerates temperatures below -40 ° C and it can cope with an extremely short growing season of two to three months only. It is 20-30 meters high and is rather shrub than tree in very high altitudes. The diameter of the trunk  is about 40 cm. The stone pine can reach an age of up to 1000 years.

The stone pine is very popular with carpenters and wood-carvers. The characteristics of this wood are the many fixed-grown, dark red-brown branches which make it look highly decorative. The annual rings are very close to each other. The narrow yellowish sapwood can be easily distinguished from the bright reddish-brown core. The wood of the stone pine is very light-weight but strong and durable.
The stone pine is considered to be particularly energetic and relaxing. A remarkable aspect is its distinctive scent which is due to the essential oils contained in the timber. Besides its calming properties, it also has a positive effect on the human organism.
